Position Description: This is a research assistant position available in Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo. The assistant will be part of an exciting team of researchers, conservationists and tour operators that are combining research and tourism efforts to protect gorillas in the area, and study a wide range of ecological and epidemiological questions.
We are looking for somebody to help in gorilla habituation, starting in June 2014 , for a period of 6-8 months. Two gorilla groups have already been habituated for several years and are visited by tourists. The team led by Dr. Magdalena Bermejo is looking to fully habituate at least one more group that is being currently followed. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with Dr. Bermejo, a highly experienced researcher in the habituation of western lowland gorillas.
The assistant’s main task will be to follow a group of gorillas for long hours in the forest from dawn to dusk. A typical day consists of approximately 10 hours walking in the forest, often through swamps and marantacea forest, for an average of 10 km per day. Other tasks include data entry, and possibly assisting with other projects including camera traps, ape surveys and fecal sampling.
The student will be based in a house for researchers that includes electricity and water (a luxury in this type of remote setting!). For more info on Odzala, please check here
Qualifications/Experience: The applicant must have at least a BSc in biology, zoology or a related discipline. Previous field experience in Central African forest or another similar setting is necessary. Fluent French to communicate with trackers is mandatory (basic French will not be accepted), and will be tested during oral interview.

Salary/Funding: 1000 euros per month.One round trip airfare to Republic of Congo and transportation to study site will be provided. Accommodation is provided. Food needs to be purchased by the assistant at a small cost. You will be required to have basic health insurance that also covers emergency repatriation and liability. You also must have vaccinations for measles, yellow fever, TB, hepatitis A and B, polio, and meningitis.
Term of Appointment: 6-8 months.
